Thanks for your interest in a job at Vertex! We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions we’ve received from candidates just like yourself. Check out the below FAQ to get a sense of our application process.

What does Vertex look for in applicants?
We’re always seeking talented individuals who want to play a role in discovering and developing medicines for people with serious diseases — at any stage of their education or career. If you’re interested in working at the intersection of science, medicine, and innovation, browse open positions here

Is having a background in science a requirement for working at Vertex?
For some research or technical roles, scientific experience is needed, but generally we strive to build the best teams for the job, which value and leverage diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. We have many positions available with no requirements whatsoever for scientific expertise.

Is having a college degree a requirement for working at Vertex?
A college degree is required for some, but not all roles at Vertex. In fact, to ensure we’re attracting a wide range of candidates, we have completed a systematic review of all our job descriptions to ensure we only list requirements if they are truly needed. If there are requirements for a role, you can view them under the Experience and Education section of the job description.

After I apply to a role at Vertex, what can I expect next?
Once your application has been submitted, you’ll receive an email confirmation that we’ve received it. If your skills and experience are a fit for the role, a Talent Acquisition team member will reach out to you begin the interview process. If we determine your skills and experience are not a good fit for the role at this time, our Talent Acquisition team will be in touch to let you know the outcome. We always encourage you to check our Careers page frequently and apply for other roles you have an interest in.

What are the typical steps in the interview process at Vertex?
We’re committed to providing candidates a positive and consistent experience in the recruitment process. If we find that you’re eligible for a role after you apply, here’s what a typical process may include after you apply to a role:

  • A recruiter will reach out to you to schedule an initial conversation.

  • Then, depending on the role and if you continue to be a good fit for the role, we’ll typically set you up with 4-6 conversations with people like the hiring manager and members of the team. These conversations may take place on-site at Vertex or virtually.

  • For certain roles, this part of the process may include additional activities like seminars, roundtable discussions or case studies.

  • Finally, the interview team will meet and determine if an offer will be extended.

We value your time and will provide updates throughout the process in a timely manner, but please note these communications may happen over the course of several weeks.

What can I do to prepare for my interview?
You’re interviewing us as much as we are interviewing you. Some question topics that may help you learn more about working at Vertex are around our culture, mission, vision, pipeline and job/function specific information. Be prepared to use specific examples from your background (e.g., education, work experience) to share how you have worked in different situations.

Does Vertex offer flexible working hours and how can I find out what the role is eligible for?
Vertex strives to ensure our employees balance professional and personal lives all with the important goal of enabling teams to thrive so we can continue to deliver our promise to our patients. Our Flex@Vertex policy allows us to do just that. You can find out what type of flexibility is offered for the role you’re interested in through conversations with your recruiter or hiring manager.

If I have questions about my application or the interview process, who should I reach out to?
