Mark has broad interests in drug discovery and deep experience in medicinal chemistry. He joined Vertex in 2016 and is the Site Head for Boston R&D, overseeing preclinical research from project initiation through to the identification of new candidate medicines. His team works on a number of serious diseases, including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, APOL1-mediated kidney diseases and sickle cell disease. 

He studied chemistry at the University of Durham and conducted postgraduate research with Professor S.G. Davies at the University of Oxford. He then moved to The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California to work with Professor K.C. Nicolaou as a NATO postdoctoral fellow. He’s a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is an author or inventor on more than 50 publications and patents. He continues to teach in his role as a visiting professor in chemistry at the University of Oxford.
