May 4, 2017
By Gail Triggs, Vice President Medical Alliances and Communications
All around the world people living with cystic fibrosis (CF), their families, and their caregivers rise to the challenges they face every day. They are a global community that works together to find new ways to support one another and improve the lives of people with CF.
At Vertex, we’re not only committed to researching and developing transformational CF medicines, we also look for other ways to help people with CF. Our CF Circle of Care program is an example of this commitment to the CF community in action. It is a competitive grant program that funds non-profit medical, academic, patient and community organizations that are developing new ways to help the CF community. Research projects funded by the CF Circle of Care include programs or tools that:
- Support people with CF living a fuller, more engaged lifestyle
- Address the psycho-social challenges people with CF face
- Better support the family members of people with CF
- Help people with CF take more ownership of their healthcare
- Focus on the education of people with CF, including topics on transition and adherence and navigating new environments with CF
2017 CF Circle of Care Grants
This week, as we recognize CF month, Vertex awarded 2017 CF Circle of Care grants to 15 recipients totaling $1 million. To date, we have awarded 50 CF Circle of Care grants totaling $3 million to organizations around the world.
This year’s recipients were chosen by a committee of CF community members and Vertex employees. The 15 selected projects represent the CF community worldwide, with recipients from Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Initiatives aim at improving the quality of life for people with CF through empowerment programs, social initiatives and increased education.
Connecting CF Circle of Care Recipients Around the World
More than simply funding programs that help people with CF and their families, the CF Circle of Care provides a network for recipients around the world to share their ideas and inspire one another. Each year Vertex hosts a CF Circle of Care Colloquium during the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference where grant recipients meet to provide updates on their projects and seek the advice, input and perspective from their peers.
Last year 23 Circle of Care grant recipients from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States convened in Orlando, Fla. to discuss their projects which included websites dedicated to helping people with CF prepare nutritious meals, mobile games to help children with CF take control of their care, cognitive behavioral therapy programs to help adults with CF improve coping skills and more.
