Dr. Jeff Leiden Honored as a Champion for Biotech Education by MassBioEd Foundation
November 8, 2017
From an early age, our CEO Dr. Jeff Leiden was fascinated with science and solving problems. To this day, Jeff feels passionately about getting students excited about STEM early in their education and providing opportunities that will prepare them to be the next generation of scientific leaders.
Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation (MassBioEd) recently honored Jeff for his ongoing advocacy and support of biotechnology education programs in Massachusetts. During his first year as CEO of Vertex, Jeff established a comprehensive STEM education program to serve Boston Public Schools (BPS) students, including a dedicated 3,000 square foot classroom and laboratory space in Vertex’s Fan Pier headquarters to provide hands-on STEM opportunities to local students. Over the past three years, Vertex has committed approximately $4.5 million to STEM education, served nearly 3,000 BPS students in the Learning Lab, awarded full-ride scholarships to five students pursuing STEM degrees at the University of Massachusetts and established mentorship opportunities for countless others.
He has also made valuable contributions to STEM education across the state as Co-Chair of Massachusetts Governor Baker’s STEM Advisory Council. Through that partnership, Jeff helped launch a statewide work-based learning initiative in November 2016 to increase the number of high school internship opportunities for students, modeled on Vertex’s successful high school internship program.
