Grants & Funding Opportunities


Vertex is committed to supporting programs and initiatives in the countries in which we operate to educate health care professionals, strengthen cystic fibrosis research and development, raise disease awareness, and provide support to nonprofit organizations. 

 

At Vertex, we're committed to supporting global healthcare improvement for patients through the medical and scientific understanding of our areas in which we focus our research for healthcare professionals. Additionally, we are committed to supporting educational programs and initiatives spearheaded by organizations focused on patient advocacy, community education and other scientific efforts related to areas in which we focus our research.

The following are the types of requests that will be considered:

Grants
  • Independent Medical Education Programs (Accredited and non-Accredited) 

  • Educational Projects and Initiatives

  • Patient Education and Advocacy

Vertex reviews grants related to:

  • Cystic Fibrosis


Vertex considers requests from the following:

  • Independent medical education providers

  • Hospitals or community health centers

  • Academic medical centers and medical universities

  • Professional medical associations/societies

  • Managed care organizations

  • Patient advocacy organizations

  • Education or meeting management companies

Vertex will not consider requests from organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age, national origin, veteran's status, or disability.
 

Examples of requests that will not be considered:

  • Requests received outside of our required timelines/deadlines

  • Requests to support specific individuals

  • Personal travel

  • Housing or travel for event/program activities

  • Capital campaigns, building funds, or operating expenses (e.g. salaries, benefits, furniture, office equipment, rent, or utilities)

  • Requests received after the project has started

  • Activities held in resorts or other lavish venues or locations

  • Requests to support entertainment or recreation, including spa or resort activities

  • Requests for events, projects, programs, or initiatives that are focused on Vertex products, are used to directly influence or advance Vertex’s commercial or marketing interests

  • Advocacy or lobbying activities directed towards specific legislation

  • Costs and expenses that do not have an apparent link with the purpose of the request

  • Funding for out of pocket costs for medical care or related items, including transportation and lodging in connection with the provision of medical care

Investigator Sponsored Studies

 

Our Investigator Sponsored Study program supports independent, investigator-sponsored research designed to advance scientific knowledge of disease states, patient populations, and medical treatment, in alignment with our clinical and nonclinical areas of interest. We work with leading researchers, doctors, public health experts and other collaborators who share our vision for transforming the lives of people with serious diseases, their families and society.

Types of Research Eligible for Support

Funding and/or drug support may be available for the following categories of research:

  • Interventional clinical studies

  • Observational studies that support research into disease states, e.g., epidemiological and outcomes studies

  • Non-clinical studies using Vertex compounds for in vitro assays or in vivo models

Cystic Fibrosis Areas of Interest
  • Natural history in cystic fibrosis (CF) and evaluation of novel biomarkers and outcome measures

  • Disease modification with cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators 

  • Impact of treatment with CFTR modulators early in disease course 

  • Non-pulmonary effects of CFTR modulators 

  • Impact of CFTR modulator use on patient and caregiver burden

Cystic Fibrosis FDA-Approved Compound-Only Requests

 

We’re interested in supporting cystic fibrosis research to strengthen scientific community knowledge through compound contributions to investigators. Requests through this program will be reviewed for in vitro or ex vivo studies only. Investigators are encouraged to apply to this program by sending their non-confidential research objective, detailed experimental plan and requested material quantity to CompoundRequests@vrtx.com.

The Vertex Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation, seeks to improve the lives of people with serious diseases and contribute to the communities where Vertex is located through education, innovation and health. Established in 2017, the Foundation is a long-term source of charitable giving and is an extension of Vertex’s corporate giving commitment.

Circle of Care

Circle of Care is a global competitive grant opportunity that funds innovative patient-centric programs for the CF community. For each Circle of Care grant cycle, Vertex awards up to $500,000 USD in support of programs that meet the Circle of Care criteria. An independent Steering Committee comprised of external individuals that are representative of the CF community, including a patient, caregiver, and healthcare providers, select the Circle of Care recipients.

Cystic Fibrosis Research Innovation Award (CF RIA)

 

The Vertex CF Research Innovation Awards are highly competitive grants created to inspire and support the next generation of M.D.s and Ph.Ds. who are working to advance the understanding of CF and establish their careers as CF researchers. The awards fall into two categories: Independent and Mentored.

Independent Research Innovation Awards

Independent Research Innovation Awards provide grants of $750,000 USD dispersed over three years to support newly independent faculty members as they establish their own research programs with outstanding promise in CF. Up to two awards will be given annually in this category.

Mentored Research Innovation Awards

Mentored Research Innovation Awards provide grants of up to $125,000 USD dispersed over two years to support mentored projects with established CF researchers. Up to four awards in this category will be given annually. 

Together these programs will provide up to $10 million USD over the next five years. Applications are reviewed and selected by an independent steering committee. 

For 2020, applications were accepted from the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Israel, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and USA.

Vertex Innovation Awards (VIA)

 

The Vertex Innovation Awards support innovative and collaborative clinical research that may improve the care of patients with CF. Applications for clinical research projects are welcomed from across the entire field of CF and are to be led by an individual or individuals with an established career interest in CF. 

Applicants are reviewed and selected by the independent VIA Committee of external experts who will select up to four projects to support with grants up to a total of $750,000 USD.  

For 2020, applications were accepted from the following countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Israel, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and USA.
