Ty Howton

Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer

Mr. Howton currently serves as our Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. He joined Vertex in 2009 as Chief Compliance Officer after serving as Chief Healthcare Compliance Officer at Genentech, Inc. starting in 2006. In his compliance roles, Mr. Howton created, implemented and managed ongoing operations for both the Vertex and Genentech Compliance Programs. Prior to working in compliance, he served as in-house counsel at Genentech and head of the Managed Care, Customer Operations and Government Affairs Legal Practice Group.

Prior to Genentech, Mr. Howton practiced in the Healthcare Group at the law firm of Sidley Austin in Chicago, IL. During his tenure, he counseled clients in various areas of healthcare and corporate law including Medicare, Medicaid and third party reimbursement programs, defense of government investigations and structuring corporate relationships between healthcare related companies. Mr. Howton holds a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University and a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law.
